G.723.1 Framing (Q53)

Typical G.723.1 framing is 3 or 4 frames per packet. I've seen 1 frame per packet, too. The lower the value, the less audio delay because you can transmit the packet without waiting for more frames to accumulate. However, lower values also result in the relatively high packet overhead being accrued over fewer frames, consuming more bandwidth and leaving less for other media, such as video, or other audio channels. If you have plenty of bandwidth and are overly obsessive about delay, use 1fpp. If bandwidth consumption is a concern, e.g., over 33.6kbps analogue dial-up connections to the Internet, use 3 or 4fpp.
