Prudent to Support G.723.1 (Q92)

The information in this article applies to:

H.323 says that over a low-bit-rate connection, if you support video, you should support G.723.1, and if you don't support video, you should support G.729. As a practical matter, however, virtually all H.323 EPs support G.723.1 and only a few support G.729. To increase your chances of interoperability, support G.723.1 regardless of whether you support video. Section 6.2.5.3/H.323v2: "An endpoint used for multimedia communications over such low bitrate links or segments should have an audio codec capable of encoding and decoding speech according to Recommendation G.723.1. An endpoint used for audio-only communications over such low bitrate links or segments should have an audio codec capable of encoding and decoding speech according to Recommendation G.729."
