The first part of each G.723.1 frame indicates what kind of frame it is and therefore how long it is. Here are the values for the two least-significant bits of the first octet of a G.723.1 frame, along with the type of frame it is and how long the frame is.

• 1 0 SID 4
• 0 0 high 24
• 0 1 low 20
• 1 1 (reserved for future use)

One must process each frame sequentially to determine where the next frame starts.
